Have you ever heard about Rap Yoga? If you haven't already, you are in the right place to start. YO!GA is here to spark positive change, and I am going to take you through my experience of practicing yoga in combination with rap and what benefits it brings to our overall wellbeing.
Yoga has become a worldwide phenomenon over the last few decades but its origin goes way back to ancient history. It is a practice that involves physical, mental, and spiritual activity and it allows us to experience deep states of freedom, peace, and self-realization.
Practising YO!GA however represents another level of bringing together the mind and the body by use of the breath, rhyme, rhythm and positive rap affirmations. Veronica came up with this unique method of combining yoga movements with rap-spoken instructions, and I must say as a fan of hip-hop music and music in general, I really found myself enjoying the class thoroughly. The fast-paced music is accompanied by a relaxed tempo and it looks like time here doesn't exist. From the first exercise, you smoothly move into the last one, and at the end, you realise how your mind is at ease with your body, and you feel free from the all tension and anxiety that surrounds you during the day. It is a different perception of how yoga can be taught and through positive affirmations that are introduced throughout the class, you feel encouraged, uplifted, and valued.
It is not a surprise that practicing yoga amongst other benefits can help to prevent back pain, achieve blood circulation, maintain vitality, shape body figure and strengthen muscles. Alongside being more flexible and energetic, you become more focused and alert.
Everyone can benefit from yoga - whether you are young, old, a man, a woman, or pregnant, you are able to adapt to the exercises based on your abilities and limitations.
Maybe you are one of many in whom this unique concept of YO!GA arouses interest. Maybe you want to try something new, something that is out of your comfort zone. If you are reading these lines, I definitely recommend you give it a try. At my first lesson, I was a bit sceptic because I haven't really experienced a proper yoga class let alone with rap instructions. I was concerned I won't be good at it or that it won't bring me any peacetime in my mind. Contrary to belief, the moment I started exercising, all negative thoughts fell out of me. I felt so relaxed that I was almost ready to go and get some very long and nice sleep. I didn't feel any pressure, or any judgment, it was just me, my body, and my soul and I could hear every breath that I have made.
It really does make you learn about self-awareness, acceptance, compassion, patience, gratitude, forgiveness, humility, love, peace, and joy. And I couldn't end this blog better by saying the affirmation that sticks in my mind after the class: "I'm taking slow steps, no stress, balance is a sign of my progress."
Never underestimate yourself and what you are capable of. Yet, one of the most important benefits of any yoga routine isn't physical — it's the quieting of the mind. Now, it’s time to realise your full potential and take the advantages of YO!GA.
